Bam!Bam!Bam! & Africa Oye To Kick Off The Summer At 24 Kitchen Street

This May, 24 Kitchen Street & Bam!Bam!Bam! in association with Africa Oye will present two new shows, setting Liverpool up for another great summer of African and Caribbean music and culture.

First up are Channel One Sound System, who for over 35 years have been perfecting their selection of reggae classics and new must-hear tracks. Having celebrated 30 consecutive years at Notting Hill Carnival, Channel One have made a name for themselves as one of one the best known reggae sound systems in Europe.

Their unique bass-heavy sound was noticed when they won the Red Bull Culture Clash in 2010, competing against the likes of Skream, Soul Jazz and Benga. Run by Mikey Dread and featuring MC Ras Kayleb, Channel One Sound System are excited to bring their own custom built sound system to Liverpool for the first time ever, when they descend on 24 Kitchen Street on 14th May.

Africa Oye 24 Kitchen Street

Afro-centric DJ heavyweight, Awesome Tapes, will be making his debut appearance at 24 Kitchen Street on 28th May, enticing audiences with his vast African cassette archive. Originally from New York, Brian Shimkovitz (aka Awesome Tapes) became immersed in the cassette culture of West Africa and started exploring the regions various genres such as old left-field soul, highlife andAfrican disco.

These influences led to the creation of Awesome Tapes From Africa, which became a critically-acclaimed vinyl label, re-releasing tracks from popular African artists such as Bola, Dur-Dur Band, Hailu Mergia and recently Penny Penny. Drawing in on international audiences, Awesome Tapes has played DJ sets across the world, specialising in highlife, fuji, benga, tsonga disco, soukous, hip-hop, rhumba and ethio-soul.

This two-part series is set to be a great build up to the 2016 Africa Oye Festival in June. The UK’s biggest celebration of African and Caribbean music and culture will feature a wide selection of artists from all over the world including the likes of Mbongwana Star and Pat Thomas.
